In order to effectively carry out their duties, managers require interpersonal, organizational, and technical skills. Management consists of a group of individuals who oversee the operations of an organization at various levels. Although the specific job may vary, most managers perform five fundamental functions: planning, organizing, staffing, directing, and controlling.

Planning is the process of determining overall company objectives and formulating the most effective approach to achieve these goals. Managers evaluate different options before selecting a specific course of action at all levels of management. Planning is regarded as the primary managerial function because the other functions rely on it. However, even as managers proceed to carry out other tasks, planning continues to be an ongoing process as goals and alternatives are further assessed and revised. Organizing, the second managerial function, involves putting the plan into action. This includes allocating resources, particularly human resources, in order to accomplish the objectives. It also involves creating new positions and defining responsibilities. Staffing, which entails selecting the most suitable individuals for each role, is also part of the organizing function. The fourth function is the day-to-day guidance and supervision of employees. In the directing function, managers provide guidance, training, and motivation to individuals so that they can reach their full potential and simultaneously achieve the company’s goals established during the planning stage. Finally, managers control and assess how well the overall company objectives are being achieved. If there are any issues and the objectives are not being met, adjustments may need to be made to the organizational or managerial structure. In making these adjustments, managers may need to revisit the planning, organizing, and directing functions.
