A. During Shakespeare’s era, only a limited number of individuals spoke English, all of whom resided in what is now known as Great Britain. Over the centuries, due to various historical events, the English language spread across the globe. Five centuries ago, English was not spoken in North America; the American Indians had their own languages, as did the Eskimos in Canada, the aborigines in Australia, and the Maoris in New Zealand. English colonists arrived and established their settlements. Today, English is prevalent on every continent.

B. For a long time, people have aspired to have a universal language that could be spoken worldwide. Such a language would promote cultural and economic ties and simplify communication among people. Over the years, at least 600 global languages have been proposed, including Esperanto. Approximately 10 million individuals have learned Esperanto since 1887. Nevertheless, according to experts, English has better prospects for fulfilling this purpose.

C. When William the Conqueror invaded England in 1066, French became the official language of the court. The English continued to care for the animals and prepare their meat, retaining the names pig, sheep, and cow for the animals. The Normans, when they saw cooked meat on their table, used French terms like pork, mutton, and beef. Astonishingly, during this period, English adopted 10,000 words, including terms such as table, chair, carpet, country, state, nation, law, army, battle, peace, beauty, etc.

D. Geographically, English is the most widespread language globally and is second only to Chinese in terms of the number of speakers. According to a recent study, 90% of British teenagers do not plan to learn any foreign languages. Perhaps it’s because they don’t feel the need to, who knows?

E. English has become so popular that an increasing number of individuals in China undergo surgical procedures to improve their English pronunciation. Plastic surgeons claim that the procedure is relatively straightforward and that after it, pronunciation will be on par with that of native speakers.

F. Other languages incorporate English words, often giving them new forms and meanings. Many Japanese, French, Spanish, and German speakers blend English words with their native languages, resulting in hybrids known as Japlish, Franglais, and Spanglish.

G. For a resident of London, it is easier to comprehend an American than a Cockney. Cockney has a distinct pronunciation, accent, and vocabulary unlike any other dialect. Cockney speech is renowned for its rhyming slang, in which a word is substituted with a phrase or a person’s name that rhymes with it.
