The village where Bim was brought amazed him. People lived here too, but everything was different from where he was born and raised. The houses were small, right on the ground, without staircases, without numerous thresholds, and the doors didn’t click with locks. At night, they do lock the doors from the inside, though. All the houses were covered with ribbed, grayish-white leaves. In the morning, at the same time, smoke rose from each house, but they didn’t go anywhere, they just stood in rows, smoking quietly and peacefully. But what amazed Bim the most now was that various animals and birds lived here with the people: cows, chickens, geese, sheep, pigs, whose acquaintance was not immediate. Behind each human house, the animals had their own houses, sometimes covered with straw, sometimes with reeds, and fenced with a low, see-through wall made of twisted sticks and twigs. And no one ever touched – neither people the animals and birds, nor the animals the people, and no one shot at anyone with a gun. On the first day, Bim was given hay in the corner of the barn. The man tied him with a rope, fed him well, and went somewhere, wearing a coat. The rest of the day, Bim spent in solitude, in complete silence and stillness. Before evening, he heard the sheep rustling with their hooves on the ground as they entered the yard, heard the cow lowing in the barn. And soon, the man came back, but now with a boy in a coat, in boots, wearing a cap on his head, holding a long stick in his hand. His face was as brown as a kind person’s, and the boy smelled like sheep. — Well, Alesha, look at our new friend, — the grown-up said to the boy. They approached Bim closely. Bim stood up, sat down, and extended his paw to the boy, which was his way of saying, «Hello. You are nice.»
