What is the nature of human beauty? Human beauty can be external and internal. After reading Vasiliy Astafyev’s story «Photograph, Where I Am Not,» I became interested in internal beauty, the beauty of a rural person. The story describes simple village people. They live modestly, with very simple lives. But the most important thing is that they have preserved their inner warmth while living in difficult conditions and they share it with others. The author depicts the villagers as illiterate, their speech is simple, and they always speak from the heart. Is this not where the beauty of a person lies? Truly kind people, always ready to help others. Astafyev particularly emphasizes the simplicity of rural life. Without any excesses or conveniences in their homes, yards. People living in the village are not always externally beautiful. Astafyev gives the example of Uncle Levonti. A person who drinks and breaks dishes. But he is a simple person, open to others, and without malice. This story is very relevant in our time, as we lack the beauty of the soul. That is beauty: in a village where neighbors guide and support the young and inexperienced, generously treat guests, provide support, not friends. Astafyev’s friend did not go to be photographed because his comrade was ill. Sanka feels guilty for his friend’s illness. He overcomes a great temptation, as a large and rare opportunity for a photograph in the village. This is an example of friendship, loyalty, and conscience. The village women provide food for the teacher and his wife, take care of their child, and guide the young female teacher. An example of respect and mutual assistance. It is very rare to find such things nowadays, when neighbors support each other without any payment, repairing the school teacher’s valenki boots. He is respected and loved simply because he greets everyone and never refuses anyone. The village lives as one big family, united and strong. Though there may be occasional conflicts, with the power of goodness and forgiveness, all hardships can be overcome. A kind, open person is always liked by everyone, bringing light to the society they join. There are many people who are externally beautiful, but some of them may have a cold soul, which often repels and hurts others. But a truly beautiful person is someone who is beautiful in their soul, beautiful through their actions and the words they express their thoughts with, through their smile. Beauty lies in the heart!
